How is the Barbro different from a normal tamper?
All other tampers available on the market are based on the principle of applying static force to compact and distribute the powder. The Barbro always achieves a homogeneous and reproducible extraction result by using intelligent vibration, without static force. This makes tamping child's play for everyone.
Why do I have to distribute and compact the coffee powder after grinding?
Without compaction and distribution, the ground coffee would not offer any resistance to the water, and the extraction would be extremely uneven and too short. The homogeneous distribution and compaction of the ground coffee in the portafilter after grinding is what makes extraction possible.
How can I compact and distribute the coffee powder?
Nowadays, tools such as needles (WDT) and/or levelers are usually used after grinding to distribute before tamping. Tamping itself was previously based on the application of static force to compress the coffee powder after distribution. The Barbo takes on both tasks by applying intelligent vibration without having to apply static force.
What effect does vibration have on distribution?
Vibration has always been used to compact powder. Vibration reduces the friction between the particles and enables compaction without static force.
Doesn't vibration cause fine particles to settle in the lower part of the portafilter?
The distribution and compression of the particles with the Barbro in the portafilter happens so quickly that a separation of fine and coarse particles cannot occur. Such effects are only relevant with loose powders or when there is a lot of space and a much longer exposure time to the vibration.
The Barbro has no guidance - can I still tamp evenly?
Since no force needs to be applied when tamping with the Barbro and an ergonomic posture is maintained, tamping evenly can be effortlessly achieved.
What is the challenge with static tamping?
When tamping statically, a high force of 20kg is usually exerted on the powder in an unergonomic posture. At the same time, care must be taken to tamper vertically. This is often a big challenge, especially for petite people, and the fun factor is very low.
Can I tamp too strong?
No. With static tamping, the particles are pressed into a puck using static force, minimizing the air pockets between the particles. Once this process is complete, more force will not change the result. With the Barbro, you can reach this point without using any force and distribute the powder evenly.
How often can I tamp with the Barbro?
With a fully charged battery, the Barbro allows up to 3,000 applications.
How often do I need to charge the Barbro?
For home use, 1-2 charges per year are usually sufficient.
How do I charge the battery?
To charge the battery, unscrew the cover and connect it directly to a USB-C cable. The battery is fully charged in around 2 hours.
